2025 Update: St Martin's Church is a sacred space for worship and community. The church is a vibrant and welcoming community grounded in faith, history, and the spirit of togetherness. The Bell Tower at St Martin's Church is 30 meters high, opened by Her Majesty the Queen and dedicated by The Rt. Revd. John Perry on 12th March 1999, houses eight historic bells. Six were gifted from the church of St Nicholas, Colchester, and all were made over 500 years ago at London’s Whitechapel Bell Foundry. The Tenor Bell, cast in 1441 by Joanna Hille, is the first bell in the world made by a woman. The bells were renewed on the church's 40th anniversary in November 2002. In St Martin's Church’s history, women have played a vital role, from Joanna Hille casting a bell in 1441 to Rev and Esther Elaine McCafferty becoming the church’s first female Rector. The Land for the church was conveyed, and the Foundation stone was laid by Humphrey Gale, Chairman of Basildon Development Corporation, in 1960. The freestanding Bell Tower was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1999. St Martin's Church is committed to creating a sacred space for worship, strengthening community bonds, and empowering individuals to live out their faith through acts of kindness, compassion, and outreach within their community and beyond. Safeguarding is their utmost priority. They conduct engaging activities and initiatives designed for young people of all ages.
