“Solway Aviation Museum is home to over twenty aircraft, with the star of the displays being the Avro Vulcan XJ823, a B2 MRR variant. Visitors are allowed into the cockpit for a guided tour on regular days. Solway Aviation Museum provides a one-way system for safety, allowing visitors to see some of the aircraft on certain occasions. Inside the museum, you will walk through a WW2 air raid shelter, returning to 1941. There are also displays of RAF Crosby and aircraft armaments. Moving through the gift shop, you arrive at the aircraft engine area with displays ranging from early piston engines to powerful jet engines, and then you enter the Bluestreak Rocket room with displays of the British rocket program of the ’50s & ’60s.

2025 Update: Solway Aviation Museum now has more than 20 aircraft on display. They are also open on English Bank Holiday Mondays.”

Absolutely outstanding experience, can really get a great feel for a lot of the exhibits and getting to sit inside several aircraft was great. The Vulcan experience was fantastic, its a must do! Very friendly, informative and cheery volunteers who were so happy to talk that I'm already looking forward to my next visit and cant wait to follow the progress on Big Bev the last surviving Blackburn Beverley, what an amazing aircraft.

This place is amazing! My son who loves planes wanted to go here to see the planes up close. He was amazed at how many planes he could go inside and look at, especially the Vulcan! You book a slot for this but is so worth it. We had to wait just under 2 hours for our slot but we managed to fill in the time looking at all the other things on offer at the museum and the planes outside alone so time flew by. The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable which my son loved as he had so many questions he wanted to ask. We also visited the gift shop, which had reasonable priced gifts on offer and also for a cup of tea! Can't fault this place and can't wait to go back to see Blackburn Beverley. Would definitely recommend if you love planes or don't as its a great day out!!

found this place by chance on the way to somewhere else, unfortunately it was late and closed, so when heading home a few days later we stopped in, other half loved it, spent about 2/3hrs here looking at the indoor and outdoor displays. would recommend, fairly cheap admission too for the time we needed up spending here. they have a small gift shop, staff were friendly.

We visited on 4th oct Very well maintained & looked after museum . Friendly staff very knowledgeable. Icing on the cake was guided tour of the Vulcan , where I was flight engineer . CUMBRIA'S MUSEUM OF MILITARY LIFE REVIEWS

This is excellent for its size. Information from 1700s to present day. Good displays and information boards. Staff helpful and will answer any questions. Didn't pay as its included in my English Heritage membership so can't comment on admission price but seem to think it was quite reasonable

Great little museum in the grounds of Carlisle castle, free to visit once you've paid to visit the castle, we are English Heritage members so entry to the castle is free. If your at the castle and Tony is doing one of his free tours make sure your on it!

A Great little museum. The museum relates to the history of Cumbria’s County Infantry Regiment, the Border Regiment and the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment and local Militia.

A treasure of a museum! Small entrance fee, takes about an hour to view, appreciate the work properly and you’re given a magnifying glass to see the details more clearly. Very interesting place within a lovely garden centre that sells delicious cakes! A lovely afternoon. Museum could do with a little attention and updating, such as lighting, decor and signage, but still a very interesting place.

Fascinating miniatures. So much detail and the craftsmanship of the models is exquisite. This is a fulfilling hobby for some! You need about an hour to look round and a magnifying glass is provided. No photos allowed inside.

Amazing what people can make with their barehands! Some incredible works of art that feel bit like there are going to waste where they are. The museum is downstairs in the garden centre, really should be situated somewhere where more people can find it.
