“Sciennes Primary School incorporates themes like global citizenship and sustainability from the Curriculum for Excellence, giving students chances to build practical life and work skills. Sharon McGhee is the headteacher of Sciennes Primary School. The school serves the communities of the Grange, Sciennes and Mayfield on the south side of Edinburgh. Sciennes Primary School has 600 pupils and 16 staff members. They celebrate and greatly value the incredible diversity in the Sciennes family. Sciennes Primary School is a beautiful example of Victorian architecture. The school has a large hall, one general-purpose room, a two-room library, an ICT learning centre and a science base. They have a swimming pool situated in the basement. They have created a beautiful 'quiet area' in the playground to enhance experiences for children. They provide appropriate Tip Activities and Weekly Activities. Sciennes was awarded Unicef’s Bronze ‘Rights Committed‘ in October 2015 and Level One Silver ‘Rights Aware‘ in May 2016. They are working towards a Level Two Gold ‘Rights Respecting‘ award and have an accreditation visit from Rights Respecting Schools Assessors.”
