“Air Raid Shelters offers an independent guided tour of a purpose-built underground tunnel network used as wartime shelters. Air Raid Shelters consist of almost 1 mile of underground air-raid shelters dug under Stockport. They were constructed six miles south of Manchester during World War II to protect local inhabitants during air raids. Here, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the experiences of local people during the war. They can explore the displays in the tunnels and use the state-of-the-art audio guides. Mementoes from the 1940s are also presented here. Visitors can book a time slot before their visit, as only a limited number of tickets will be available daily for walk-up visitors.

2025 Update: Air Raid Shelters' smallest of the tunnel shelters could accommodate 2,000 people, and the largest 3,850.”

“Avro Heritage Museum preserves the legacy of Alliott Verdon-Roe and his company, A.V. Roe & Co (Avro), in Stockport. The Museum is home to the only example of an all-white Vulcan bomber packed with fascinating exhibits. Here, there are many activities on offer and things to do for all ages. The museum also has a café on-site that offers light refreshments and fantastic views of the mighty Vulcan bomber, which stands proudly outside. The simulator provides an educational and enjoyable experience for all age groups, with a bit of fun as well. It is a really interesting place to learn about the history of WW2. The tour begins with a short audio visual display, cleverly done with lights and shadows, which sets the scene for the creation of the shelters. Once that is over, you venture into the tunners. There are areas detailing the history of the area during WW2 and other interesting bits of history. There are various areas to see, including the wardens room, sleeping areas, toilets, sick bay, kitchen area, and a reconstructed Anderson shelter. There is an accompanying audio tour that gives extra information at various points, as well as real testimonies of experiences. Finally, there's a shop with wartime themed items. I noticed a sign for guided tours that happen on some evenings where you get to see extra parts of the tunnels not usually accessible to the public (age 16+ for this tour). We spent around 45 minutes here as a family, but could have easily spent double the time if we didn't have a toddler with us.

What an absolutely fascinating place!!! You really get the sense of how it must have been back then , hiding underground. There's quite a few information boards and the audio tour is very detailed! Great for those whose kids are learning about WW2 at school. The staff are lovely and will answer any questions you may have! Amazing experience.

Well worth a visit. The audio visual at the beginning is fairly poor, but the material on the audio guides is very well done. Gives a good idea of WWII "make do and mend" initiative and creativity..

AVRO HERITAGE MUSEUM REVIEWS

A wonderful Saturday well spent. Lots to see and do. Virtual reality and actual cockpits to see. The staff tours of the various cockpits were excellent and informative. I'm not a plane nerd, just interested in these magnificent machines and what they achieved in war and peace. There is a cafe for drinks and snacks and a very good souvenir shop. I'm sure even the young and old will find it well worth the visit.

Definitely a must for those interested in aviation heritage. Plenty of displays, models, and some simulator interactivity. Cafe and shop, and plenty of outside seating and grassed area through the building. Although dogs are not allowed in the museum,my dog was allowed into the grassed area and took turns going inside. Lots of friendly and knowledgeable assistants too.

Great place to support and visit, we were entering our Mini at a classic car show and had admission included. We had a brilliant day and staff and volunteers are really friendly and helpful.

HAT WORKS MUSEUM REVIEWS

The hat works are amazing and offer you a valuable and unique glimpse into the past. You can buy nice items in the gift shop for a reasonable price. As a resident of Stockport, I found it interesting to find out the history of the building as well as the history of the hat connections with the town. I recommend that you come here.

This place is amazing. Really amazing. Make an afternoon of it with your family, there are a cinema and a pool nearby.

Great place to discover the history of hatting in Stockport & Arc is superb.
