St. Mary's Cathedral was designed in Gothic Revival architecture by Alexander Ellis, and the construction was completed in 1860. The church is one of the most significant parish buildings in the heart of Aberdeen city centre. The cathedral serves as a multicultural parish dedicated to seeking the faith and glory of God through prayer and worship. The bells were cast in 1876, and the spires were constructed the same year. St. Mary's Cathedral has a calm and peaceful ambience, attracting people from neighbouring communities to attend prayers, worship, and masses. Originally serving the rapidly growing population, the church was expanded as the community grew to 74,000 people and was later elevated to cathedral status.

2025 Update: St. Mary's Cathedral provides music led by the Aberdeen African Choir at 11 am on the third sunday.
