“St. Mary's Church opened for services on Wednesday, August 4th, 1852, with a small presbytery built on the south side of the chancel. The church is a Grade II listed building, regarded as an excellent early example of the revived Gothic style by a leading Victorian designer of Catholic churches. St. Mary's Church was built from 1851 to 1852 based on designs by Charles Hansom from Bristol. In 1976, due to the liturgical revisions brought about by Vatican II, the altar was moved from its original position, built into the reredos of the High Altar, and relocated to the front of the sanctuary.
