“2025 Update: St Michael at the North Gate Church was established as one of the four original gate churches to the city. The church is the only gate church which has continued in its role, and is now the City Church. There has been a church on the site for even longer, but parts of the current building date to about 1040. The church is open daily for prayer and contemplation, and regular worship. The church has an inviting and pleasant ambience that attracts people from different communities to attend services, prayers, and worship. St Michael at the North Gate is very popular among locals, who use the space to rest, discuss, meditate, and study. The current church tower, dating from around 1040, is a prominent feature. The church offers a peaceful setting, harmonising with its surroundings. St Michael at the North Gate provides free admission for all visitors, although there is a small charge for climbing the tower. They host several evening services, so the church is often open later than the normal hours. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, they are usually open until around 6 PM to accommodate services and events.”

UNIVERSITY CHURCH OF ST MARY THE VIRGIN REVIEWS

Great church. Free to go inside the church. If you want to climb the tower however you have to pay. £7 per person. There is roughly 130 steps to the top. Old stone stairs you have to pass people on the stairs. It's not one way up and one way down. You get great views of the Radcliffe square and Oxford city. If it's windy I would not recommend it as it's very windy and cold up there. There is also a cafe called the vaults at the side of the church. Climb the tower have a good look around the city. Come back down and grab a coffee.

Lovely historic church right in the heart of Oxford! The University Church of St Mary the Virgin has some stunning architecture and a really peaceful vibe. You can climb the tower for an incredible view of the city, totally worth it! Great spot to learn a bit of history or just relax in the café next door. Perfect place to take a break while exploring Oxford.

This church is truly beautiful. We were fortunate to visit during a choir practice, allowing us to rest and enjoy the music. We then decided to climb the tower, which offers amazing views for those willing to ascend the 127 steps to the top. Although we queued for approximately 15 minutes, it was well worth the wait..

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL REVIEWS

What an awesome experience visiting this amazing college. It's a place full of history and one of the most important of Oxford and a MUST for every Harry Potter fans since here were filmed some scenes of the fist movie. Highly recommended.

The founder of Oxford's Frideswide holiday and philosopher John Locke are buried here, Harry Potter and the Golden Compass were filmed here, and every Friday (when there are no holidays) the boys from Christ Church School sing angelically at the assembly. Enjoy.

Once in UK, is a must to visit Oxford and the Oxfordshire region. A fully Historical place where you can really feel to live in another era. Unique towns built under roman gothic style. And then the famous Oxford University. Again, at least once in the life you should go!!

ST MICHAEL AT THE NORTH GATE REVIEWS

An amazing place to visit - the oldest building in Oxford. Definably worth a effort and price to climb to the top of the Saxon tower, believes it around 100 steps to the top - great views and you get to see (and hear) the bells as you climb. Make sure you press the clock mechanism button as you climb. The stained glass windows in the church are truly and amazing. A wonderful place to visit a true gem of English history and can't wait to visit again. If you get a nice day you can even see Antony Gormleys Sculpture on top of a building in Broad Street.

I had a good day in Oxford this week when visiting. This church was the highlight. The crafts, church decor, history and view from the roof as you can see in the photos I took. I'm coming back for more of the stained glass crafts.

An absolutely beautiful church in the centre of Oxford that offers incredible history and a place of peace and quiet reflection. The church tower is said to be the oldest building in Oxford (Constructed in 1040) and for a small fee, you can climb to the top for some wonderful and unforgettable views of Oxford.
