2025 Update: St Michael at the North Gate Church was established as one of the four original gate churches to the city. The church is the only gate church which has continued in its role, and is now the City Church. There has been a church on the site for even longer, but parts of the current building date to about 1040. The church is open daily for prayer and contemplation, and regular worship. The church has an inviting and pleasant ambience that attracts people from different communities to attend services, prayers, and worship. St Michael at the North Gate is very popular among locals, who use the space to rest, discuss, meditate, and study. The current church tower, dating from around 1040, is a prominent feature. The church offers a peaceful setting, harmonising with its surroundings. St Michael at the North Gate provides free admission for all visitors, although there is a small charge for climbing the tower. They host several evening services, so the church is often open later than the normal hours. On Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, they are usually open until around 6 PM to accommodate services and events.
