NEW BRIGHTON LIGHTHOUSE
Since 1683
“New Brighton Lighthouse is a prominent lighthouse in Wallasey, UK. The tower is close to Fort Perch Rock, a landmark built in the 1820s to defend the Port of Liverpool. A primitive wooden light known as a perch, a wooden tripod supporting a lantern, was first installed here in 1683, giving it the alternate name Perch Rock. The perch marked the Black Rock to the North Channel of Liverpool Bay. The current lighthouse was completed in 1830 and first lit on 1st March. The lighthouse keepers lived in the upper part of the tower, accessed by a ladder leading to a door partway up. The lighthouse initially displayed a fixed light, replaced in 1878 by a flashing light using Argand oil lamps placed behind a three-sided mirror array. Three bells mounted beneath the gallery served as a fog signal.”
