Since its opening in 1905, the stadium has served as the home ground of Southport FC stadium. Southport FC stadium has also hosted youth international matches. In 1921, it was officially renamed Haig Avenue after Earl Haig. Although the stadium has a capacity of 7,000, the record attendance was 20,010 during an FA Cup fourth-round match against Newcastle United in 1932. A similar number attended another FA Cup tie against Everton in 1968.
