“Southampton Common supports a wide variety of wildlife, including one of the largest populations of the nationally rare great crested newt in Britain. The park hosts various community events, such as the Flower Festival and the Race for Life for Cancer Research UK. Covering 365 acres, the park features woodlands, rough grasslands, ponds, wetlands, and lakes. The design encourages adventurous play with zip wires, a climbing tower, slides, and swings. The park also offers a new nature play and water play area that is popular with kids of all ages. Many picnic benches and seating areas make it ideal for picnics, and the Cowherds located near the playground offer a range of food options.

2025 Update: The park has an on-site toilet and a baby changing area that is open when the kiosk is open.”

“Itchen Valley Country Park is a beautiful area of water meadows and woodlands beside the River Itchen, renowned for earning multiple Green Flag awards. The park is suitable for all ages, with well-spaced climbs and scrambles along its trails. “2025 Update: Friends of St. James' Park is a charity that runs and oversees the events and support groups in St. James' Park, Southampton. The park has a history team and a gardening team that runs 4 annual events, organises and helps groups for the community. Friends of St. James' Park also features a half basketball court, table tennis, a large playground, gym equipment, tennis courts, a climbing wall, and a cafe operated by Parklife Community Interest Company. Friends of St. James' Park is the best spot to spend time with your friends and family.”

I never knew such a great park existed just behind me here. I went with my family and friends for a Easter picnic and had a swell time playing football with the wives and soaking in the sun while having great meals we had prepared from home. Felt like I was back in my home country. Though I didn’t get to explore the whole park. I heard there’s a lot of sight for the eyes at the common and how big it is. We hope to visit there again.

Southampton Common currently includes 365 acres (148 ha)[3] of woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a children's play area, a model yachting lake, and a fishing lake. It’s a great place to relax and if you get hungry there is a local pubs with Food To the west, bordering on Hill Lane, is a historic cemetery that also includes many rare flora and fauna. Cemetery Lake is popular for birds.

Dog and child friendly. A little piece of the countryside in the middle of a town. Love it. Ideal for walks, picnics, ball games, play park etc. enjoy a walk around the old Southampton Cemetery with its historical graves!

ITCHEN VALLEY COUNTRY PARK REVIEWS

It's a beautiful place to wander and feel in touch with nature as you walk through fields and wooded areas, with many dog walkers and runners. Also plenty of little play parks for kids There is a dog washing facility (payment required) There are some bridle paths around, so certain areas will need dogs on leads which will have plenty of signage saying so. There are a few signs warning you of ticks, so make sure you check for them once you leave! No BBQs are allowed at present due to the risk of fire spreading, but there are plenty of picnic benches around Go Ape looks fantastic, with the tree top courses and an axe-throwing activity.

Great place to enjoy walking around, tracks that take you around a large area of open fields, pass over the river itchen, see fish swimming, butterflies,dragonflies and birds in abundance. Plenty of play space for kids of all ages.There is carparking to pay. I live local so opted to walk from my home about a mile & half away. Restrooms: Situated by the cafe rest area near the entrance.

Great country park with plenty to do for children and walks for dogs. The car park charges are reasonable too, especially all day. The cafe isn't large, but the food is good and everything is kept clean with plenty of space inside and out to sit. We aren't local, but we go here quite often when visiting and have used the Go Ape on a number of occasions. Would recommend.

Very nice little park for walking and enjoying the whether. It also has a playground for little ones and toddles with lots of activities. There is a coffeeshop but sadly it closes very early. The field is convenient for ball sports. Also, there are many picnic tables. It is really good park.

Well kept rectangular park with seating, a cafe and a great children's play and picnic area. Also features a tennis court, netball area, outdoor gym, swing and outdoor ping pong table. Popular with dog walkers and local community

Lovely park in the middle of Southampton. Outdoor activities for young and old. Would recommend. Toilets and cafe available on site.
