“Elsecar Heritage Centre is a vibrant historical site featuring art and craft workshops, historic exhibits, shops, and a children's play area. The building was originally used for ironworks, forges, a distillery, and engineering workshops. The Centre has stores, galleries, studios for art and design, and exhibition space and covers the area's industrial history. The Centre runs art displays, special programmes, and a monthly fair for antiques. Elsecar Heritage Centre is home to the world's Newcomen steam engine, which is still in its original position. The engine was listed in 1972 as a designated ancient site. During the period 2012-14, the engine was returned to working condition. Their reservoir has been transformed into a nature reserve with diverse wildlife. Elsecar Heritage Centre makes a perfect day out for families.

CANNON HALL MUSEUM REVIEWS

Brilliant destination. Superb place to visit. Where does one start?! Large car park; farm with livestock as well as mammal and reptile houses; loads - just loads for kids to do, this place will wear them out! Lots of innovative play areas; walled garden; wicker sculptures and artworks; ponds and boating lake; good footpaths; dog friendly; colourful flowerbeds; established trees and great vistas; gentle walking, no overly steep bits at all; very friendly squirrels and geese! Follies; beautiful wood carvings; the hall itself is free to visit but relies on donations; plentiful assortment of eating places to suit everyone, from takeaway to dog friendly ones; gift shop; amazing collections within the hall from furnishings to the glorious glassware collection, stunning paintings and photography exhibition. My three highlights from the day: watching the leaf cutter ants, the intricate wood carving artworks in the grounds and (huuuge fan of Rene Lalique!) the magnificent bird vase by Lalique. Outstanding! Sooo highly recommend this place on all accounts.

A gem, if you like preserved homes and walled gardens. Plus quite a bit of land surrounding with trails and walkways. Currently there are clothes from some famous films and TV shows. Entry is free and parking is also free for those with blue badge. The staff were friendly and helpful.

Had a short visit to look around the artisan market and garden centre and we were shocked by how beautiful this place is. I can't believe we've never been before now looking forward to another visit to have a better look around.

EXPERIENCE BARNSLEY MUSEUM & DISCOVERY CENTRE REVIEWS

Free museum to visit in the civic building. It's not huge, but there's plenty to see and facts to absorb. Very well put together and displayed. Local interest and history, archaeology, fashion, miners and coal, historical artefacts, inventions, military regalia and special exhibitions. Interesting calendar of events. Gorgeous old, as in 'propahh' old iron lift. Public loos. Fab little café called the Old George. Beautiful elegant architecture. Set in attractive, colourful gardens. Great facility. Well done, Barnsley.

A very welcoming free museum. Wonderful for children with all sorts to look at. Personally I found the local celebrity display case with Charlie Williams original This is Your Life book particularly interesting. It's a small museum and doesn't take long to look around so well worth your time to pop in. There was a nicely stocked gift shop with reasonable prices.

It is a very interesting albeit small museum. There was a guided talk/tour going on whilst I visited which I didn't gatecrash, but from what I did see and hear, the young gentleman conducting it was doing a fine job indeed. I believe there is a cafe also within, and there is a shop.

ELSECAR HERITAGE CENTRE REVIEWS

Amazing place, they keep having these different workshops, then there is mind, body and spirit festivals, some or the other exhibition, very very interesting. It's accessible by train also other than your own conveyance. Lovely place for exploring shops and looking at local history with family or individually. They have children's play area too. Lot's of eateries with vegan and gluten free options. Wheelchair accessible. Toilets are clean.

We visited here with 24 Scouts and they could not have been more helpful. With only a days notice, they agreed to chat to them about the history and purpose of the buildings. They were also welcomed in to watch a film about the history. I would personally like to thank the staff for being so lovely, friendly and accommodating! The Scouts were welcomed into the businesses also and the lady at Emily's sweet shop agreed to make up some sweet bags for them to purchase. I would recommend this as a great destination for all ages, nice place to visit, nice shops and food, and close by to the reservoir which is also a nice place to visit.

Nice place to visit on a sunny day, one of the largest antique shops I've ever been in.
