St John's Orthodox Church was established in honour of the great Ukrainian saint, St John of Shanghai, Archbishop for Orthodox until 1962. The Church, built in Colchester in 1855, is regularly attended by some 600 Orthodox parishioners of 25 different nationalities. Part of the Romanian Orthodox Church under Metropolitan Joseph and his Synod of Western and Southern Europe, it is part of a group of multinational parishes in the East of England. They serve the rapidly growing Orthodox Christian community in Essex and Suffolk with regular liturgies and other services, with two priests and two deacons just in Colchester. Apart from the main large church, there is also a small church dedicated to all the Saints of these Isles. St John's Orthodox Church is a multilingual parish whose services follow the Russian Orthodox tradition, and it cares for Orthodox Christians of all backgrounds. The church also holds many events to give glory to God and teach the importance of the Orthodox faith and identity.

2025 Update: St John's Orthodox Church, adorned with stunning icons and rich in history, captivates visitors with its unique blend of architectural elegance and heartfelt devotion. The harmonious choral singing during liturgies, performed in English, Slavonic, and Romanian, enhances the worship experience, creating an inviting ambiance that resonates with both long-time congregants and newcomers alike.
