St Austin’s and The English Martyrs has been providing a place of worship for Christians in Wakefield since it opened in 1828. The church serves the city centre of Wakefield and the surrounding areas. The parish is large and active, with 500 people attending Mass every Sunday. The parish includes two churches: St. Austin’s, located in the city centre, built in 1828, and one of the oldest churches in the Diocese, and St Austin’s and The English Martyrs, built in 1957 to serve the western suburbs of the city. The church is notable as one of the first Catholic churches constructed in the area since the Reformation, earning its title as Wakefield’s “mother church”.
