“Ellenroad Engine House Steam Museum is the world’s largest working steam mill, which is managed and operated by The Ellenroad Trust Ltd. The mill has 99,756 mule spindles, drawing frames, and carding machines made by Platts of Oldham. The Whitelees Beam Engine continued operation until 1942, and the facility features five Lancashire boilers requiring a 220-foot chimney for proper draft. The Irene engine, a single-cylinder horizontal engine, weighs about 7 tonnes. Restoration work, which involved approximately 4,000 person-hours and numerous society volunteers, has preserved this historic site. Visitors can enjoy a picnic area with seating, light refreshments, and free admission. Ellenroad Engine House also offers free parking and chair lifts for added convenience. Free for adults accompanied by children under 16.

“2025 Update: Rochdale Cenotaph is a First World War memorial on the Esplanade that is designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. This is one of seven memorials in England based on his Cenotaph in London and one of his more ambitious designs. Rochdale Cenotaph also features a Stone of Remembrance and a recumbent soldier effigy. Rochdale Cenotaph is surrounded by beautifully maintained gardens perfect for contemplation. This ideal place also features various amenities, including wheelchair accessibility, car parking and more.”

A few days ago I had the privilege of visiting the charming Rochdale Hall Town, and I must say that it was a truly enriching experience. From the moment my feet touched the floor of this picturesque building, I was immediately captivated by its historic charm and welcoming atmosphere. The tour of the new and reborn Rochdale Hall Town was a truly unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression on me. Its combination of history, innovation and cultural vitality makes it a must-see destination for any traveler looking to discover the best of England in the 21st century. I highly recommend this tour to those who wish to witness this exciting rebirth.

I was totally blown away by the stunning stained glass windows and the Victorian Gothic style architecture. It was a beautiful building and I really enjoyed exploring the building. I was delighted to discover as I was shown around the amazing sculptures and the history of the building.

After the restoration of the Town Hall it really looks magnificent! It's amazing to see the original colours, volunteers giving interesting history and lots of school children enjoying tours. The pop up cafe is lovely and the restaurant due to open in May. Well worth a visit!

ELLENROAD ENGINE HOUSE STEAM MUSEUM REVIEWS

Really interesting heritage site, great to see the engines running. Volunteers are really engaging and informative, great trip. I see there are different events throughout the year which is an added bonus. We saw the britannia coconut dancers, who were also very entertaining and the history of the them also a proper piece of our industrial heritage.

We visited on the first Sunday of this month and really enjoyed experiencing the power and incredible engineering of the steam machinery in action. The volunteers were hard working and helpful. Would recommend a visit to this the largest working steam powered mill engine in the world. Well worth the entrance fee and the supplement for the cost of coal at todays prices.

What a fantastic place - a real living museum where you step back in time to see the industrial powerhouse. All the volunteers were extremely helpful and had plenty of time to chat and talk about the engine. The cake was also nice from the cafe!

Buitifull place just to chill out and relax and wach the world go bye.

The gardens here should win an award, they are beautiful.
