Situated slightly off the beaten track but still in the city centre and well sign-posted this museum is helped by the fact that it is contained within a beautiful and well preserved 12th century hospital. I recommend that if you have time to visit both then buy the joint ticket for entry into the Roman Museum. The galleries take you from prehistoric times until the 1960s though I felt the best exhibits were the ones where local history was placed at the centre of the picture were most interest.

Oh wow what a wonderful day we had at Howletts. I think we managed to see nearly all the animals even the nocturnal cat. Our granddaughter was mesmerised by the monkeys and gorillas, mind you so was I. We have brought passport tickets today so for the next year will be able to see the animals during ALL seasons.....Hubby and I are already planning to go back, on our own this time so we can take it slower, this Sunday. We had a cup of tea in cafe and prices same as anywhere else.....nice...

Visited with my daughter and 10 year old grandson who is keen on history. A very enjoyable visit. The staff friendly and knowledgeable. The first 10 minutes and last 10 minutes is a guided tour in between you have a pre recorded handset explaining the various tales. Lasts about 45 mins. Good visual effects and old time smells. Seating available for those who need it in each of the sets. There are however some steps and it is quiet dark. Also a variety of dressing up costumes for the children.
