This place was recommended to my friends and I by the friendly doorman at The Grand. We were starving and were delighted to arrive at this lovely fish and chip place. There is a lot of seating and we were greeted by lovely friendly staff who met us choose a table of our liking. The decor is calming and it’s a clean restaurant with a family friendly ambience. The menu was rondel, lots of options. We went for the classic fish and chips option. Our drinks were great and I LOVED the bottomless chips!!! We also had onion rings, fresh and scrumptious. It was all as good as it gets! our swerved was v sweet, hence the photo.

Superb fish supper - the chips were lovely and not soggy at all, and the fish was fried and crispy to perfection. Pretty good price for the city centre as well, you can get a fish supper for under a tenner if you’re having it to take away. Very tasty battered sausage supper too. The service was fast and efficient as well, which is great because it can get busy at weekends.

First time trying York’s fish and chips and I am not disappointed. Delightful Whitby scampi and haddock and chips. Everything tasted fresh and cooked to perfection. Lots of sauces and condiments available. Sweet waitresses who were so kind and helpful. The toilets were extremely clean and had stunning decor.

After driving around the area around our campsite (Flaxton Meadows) on a wild dinner chase, desperately looking for a place to eat, only to be told again and again "We're not serving food tonight" we decided to call in here and give it a try. We're so glad we did. Very friendly staff, quick service, and the food when it came was a) huge and b) excellent value for money. Many places have a menu that claims something is "Giant" but it's far from it. Not here. Our "giant haddock" was huuuuuuge, and it came with mushy peas, chips, bread and butter and a pot of tea. Excellent value. We didn't have room for a dessert, that's how big the portions were. Highly recommended! (Pic shows my "Giant Haddock".

This is such a wonderful gem. The staff are fantastic, polite , friendly & funny, all in the right way. The food is first rate every time and great value. Keep it up Thompsons.

I had the seafood platter which was recommended by the waitress as I couldn’t decide what to have. The seafood platter was absolutely brilliant and I loved every bite. Thoroughly enjoyed our meals and we are definitely going to go again!

Was recommended to come here by a friend. I simply had the best fish and chips I have ever had in my life. The chips were cooked to perfection. The batter on the haddock was immaculate. Firm and crispy and plenty of it. I also had a side of mushy peas which were tasty. Throw in an enormous pot of tea, with a hot water pot to refill and I was in hogs heaven. The service was friendly and couldn’t do enough for us, which was first class. Probably the best £50 I’ve ever spent. I would highly recommend a visit. I also want them to expand and build a restaurant in Slough!

Another fantastic haddock and chips at the York Wetherby Whaler. Generous portions, attentive and efficient staff and a happy, relaxed atmosphere. Worth every penny, value for money. Always eat here when we’re in York.

I brought a coach party today on the return from a pilgrimage to Whitby. Despite us being delayed in traffic, staff were very gracious and we were so impressed by the professional way in which they dealt with a large coach party with friendly and efficient service. The food was delicious too. Thank you Weatherby Whaler, York, for a perfect end to a lovely day.
