“2025 Update: The Golden Fleece is a historic, haunted pub which is one of the oldest pubs in the city. The pub is particularly well known for its ghost stories, quirky atmosphere, and slanted floors. HOUSE OF THE TREMBLING MADNESS REVIEWS

This place is an absolute must if you are visiting York. Very eccentric and £5 a pint for lager. The surroundings are absolutely captivating. Not the biggest of bars so arrive early to guarantee a seat. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve had food here previously and it was great. It’s definitely a talking point to bring friends to.

This may be our favourite spot for beer and nibbles in York. It’s such a cool atmosphere. Upstairs in this historic building, it has vaulted ceilings, with beams are from old Viking ships. Quirky and cozy. Good selection of Belgian beers in the bar. The shop downstairs has about every beer ever made that you could take upstairs to drink if you’d like. Limited but delicious food includes cheese and meat boards that are just great to share with a group. It’s quirky and friendly.

Very cool old Viking style pub, the food was delicious and the servings were so big we had to take some home with us. Worth a visit if you’re in York.

June 2024 first visit & it did not disappoint. Occasion was a birthday meal .. service was fantastic! Every member of staff were polite & helpful. The atmosphere in the heart of York was just great, steeped in history. The food was above & beyond expectation & at a good price. Would definitely recommend a visit to this gem of a pub.

The food was mostly good, my house salad was great but the chicken was very dry (prolly grilled earlier during the day). The mac n cheese were ok and the sticky toffee pudding was really good - delicious and moist. The good vibes of the place and nice staff really make up for any downers on the food side. Best part was the 'invisible mac n cheese' from the menu: ordering it gives you nothing but your 1 pound goes to a cancer charity.

Great place to eat! The food and the ale were both amazing. Shout out to Millie who is the manager on duty. She's a rockstar. There duck hash with a fried egg on it was so good.

Incredible experience here with delicious small bites and top notch band- loved the band leader’s support of local musicians and enjoying hearing all the local talent. Everyone loved the food, drinks, and atmosphere. Great spot and a definite highlight of our York visit.

Had a fantastic night in the shambles superior room. Beautifully decorated and relaxing room. The Sunday roast was tasty and very filling. Will definitely be visiting again.

Love this creepy pub. We have not had the chance to stay there yet, but would love the opportunity. Good food. Great central location at the bottom of the Shambles.
